Rockaway Taco

Those who are already fans of the funky little hole-in-the-wall (literally) known as Rockaway Taco, are probably already counting down the hours until their next Mexican meal. Opened in 2008, this local favorite is just a short five-minute drive from Arverne By The Sea, making it a dangerously convenient, and supremely delicious local dining option. Just a block from Rockaway Beach, the eats at this street-side shanty will have your mouth watering before you even reach the intimidating, but well-worth the wait, line.

The Rockaway Taco Cult

While there may or may not officially be a Rockaway Taco Cult, the makings for such a group are just as abundant and fresh as the ingredients used at this taco stand. With a rooftop garden, the veggies and herbs are some of the freshest in town, making these tacos a truly special summertime favorite. Owners Andrew Field and David Selig are young entrepreneurs who saw a plywood shack a block from the beach at 96th Street, and decided to turn it into one of the most talked-about restaurants in town. Part of the charm is the limited seating, generally full of hipster-types, scruffy surfers, and local families, drawn to this alluring little transplant that could easily be right at home in a touristy Mexican coastal town.

What’s On the Menu?

There’s not a lot to the menu in terms of quantity in selection, but this is more than made up for with quality. In the name of keeping things fresh, simple, and cook-able in a space smaller than many Manhattan personal offices, the real pièce de résistance is the Mr. Field’s fish taco. This beer-battered tilapia is flaky and fresh, topped with zesty cabbage slaw, spicy cream, cilantro (grown on the roof), and crisp watery slices of radish. It is highly recommendable to add a dollop of guacamole to really tie this toasty corn tortilla-wrapped taco together.

Other menu items include chorizo tacos, marinated tofu tacos, quesadillas, elotes –corn on the cob served in the traditional street fashion with mayo, chili, lime, and cotija cheese-, and cucumber salad. Another fresh flavor found south of the border, and on offer at Rockaway Taco, is freshly pressed watermelon juice – something sure to please even the pickiest of little eaters when dining out with the entire family.
