When you think of a trip to New York, you might think of the city with all its glitz, glamour, and lights. However, there is more to the city than high rise buildings, luxury condos and fabulous restaurants. New York is also an amazing destination for bird watching, particularly if you head to Arverne. It is close to Riis Park, Fort Tilden and Breezy Point, all of which are excellent bird watching locations for people in New York to check out the next time you are in the mood to do some bird watching.

 

New York for Bird Watchers

This gorgeous area of New York is not far from the city, which means locals need only take a bus or cab to get to Arverne to do some bird watching. The Atlantic Flyaway migration route is one birds take each year when they head south for the winter. A number of different species of birds make stops in this area of the state during their migration period; and many actually live in the area on a regular basis. Each year, more than 200 different species of birds fly through the New York area during their migratory period. This is prime bird watching for those who enjoy seeing birds not native to the area.

 

Birds that migrate around New York are often seen in large numbers due to the fragmented area of space they have to land and eat. For this exact reason, many people consider New York a better place to bird watch than the actual wilderness. There are hundreds of species of birds in the area that live here throughout the year, and that stop over when they are in the process of migrating further south for the winter.

 

The proximity of Jamaica Bay, which is a huge wildlife sanctuary, makes it possible for residents and visitors of the city to go out and see some very amazing wildlife. This includes a number of birds that live in the nearly 18,000 acres of Jamaica Bay, off the coast of New York.

 

Breezy Point

Westernmost you can get on foot from Arverne by the Sea is Breezy Point, it is largely undisturbed, which makes it one of the best places in New York to go bird watching. There are beaches, sand dunes, and marshes that not only make it a great place for birds to stop and enjoy a break when migrating, but for you to take a walk and enjoy the sights and sounds that nature this undisturbed has to offer.

 

Fall and spring on Breezy Point is the best time to do bird watching if you want to see shorebirds moving south for the winter and and moving to Arverne for the summer. Depending on the type of bird watching you like to do, there is no bad time of year to go to Breezy Point, or any of the other places in Arverne, to bird watch. You will see anything from heron to oystercatcher to falcons that are currently listed as endangered, though hopefully that status will change in the coming years.

 

This is an area of the city most people don’t realize exists. New York is more than just a big city that never sleeps; it’s a place close to nature where bird watchers delight in seeing some of the most beautiful sights in the bird watching community.
